“Li Peng’s June 4th Diary” is an important document for understanding the 1989 political turmoil in China. From the perspective of Li Peng, then Premier of the State Council of China, the book details the inside story of decision-making from Hu Yaobang’s death on April 15, 1989, to the convening of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China’s Fourth Plenary Session in late June. Due to its involvement in highly sensitive internal party disagreements, high-level decision-making, and military actions, the book has been strictly blocked within China, and its publication process itself has become a decade-long political game. Recording these words is not only to peek into the operation of power, but also to complete the historical puzzle that has been long obscured by the official narrative.
