In the era of mobile internet, obtaining information and news through the internet has become a common way for us to understand the outside world, but some netizens have a weak awareness of laws and risk prevention, and illegally use “over-the-wall” software (commonly known as VPN or “ladder”) to access overseas websites, register accounts, and participate in group chats. Curiosity can not only bring personal information security risks, but even affect national security and social stability.

The trap behind “freedom”

——Leakage of personal privacy information. “Over-the-wall” software often claims to protect user privacy and data security. But in fact, “over-the-wall” service providers or external attackers may exploit various vulnerabilities to steal users’ browsing history, account passwords and other personal privacy data, ultimately leading to incalculable losses. A user once browsed overseas websites through “over-the-wall” software and used a credit card to pay for data fees to an institution. Six months later, the credit card was stolen and thousands of dollars were swiped.

——Espionage by overseas spy networks. Some “over-the-wall” software is controlled by overseas forces, and even directly developed and operated by overseas spy intelligence agencies. They use Trojan horse viruses to forcibly read users’ personal information and device storage files, and transmit data back. An employee of a confidential unit, in order to access overseas academic forums, mistakenly installed “over-the-wall” software, which was actually developed by an overseas spy intelligence agency, resulting in remote control of his work mobile phone and computer, and a large amount of confidential research data was stolen. The national security agency pursued his criminal responsibility in accordance with the law.

——Triggering a chain of illegal risks. Some netizens, without any precautions, are easily eroded by fraudulent information, extreme ideas, and political rumors, which may lead to the initial “curious browsing” developing into “active participation”, becoming victims and accomplices of illegal and criminal acts, bringing a chain of illegal risks and falling into the quagmire of crime. An employee of a state-owned enterprise has long accessed overseas anti-China websites, watched videos about political rumors about China, and downloaded and disseminated them, and was arrested by the national security agency in accordance with the law.

Reject illegal “over-the-wall” and build a solid security barrier

The internet is not a place beyond the law, and “over-the-wall” on the internet is absolutely not allowed. Using “over-the-wall” software itself violates relevant laws and regulations of our country. And the so-called “place beyond the law” that you step into after “over-the-wall” is even a gathering place for all kinds of bad and untrue information due to the lack of effective supervision. The vast number of netizens should strictly abide by the bottom line, surf the internet in accordance with the law and regulations, consciously maintain a clean and upright network environment, and jointly safeguard their own information security and national interests.

——Refuse to use “over-the-wall” software. The vast number of citizens, especially public officials, should consciously abide by relevant national regulations, refuse to use “over-the-wall” software, and resolutely resist “over-the-wall” behavior. Individuals and units that do have academic and business needs should access overseas through legal and regular channels approved by the state.

——Be cautious about downloading applications from unknown sources. In daily life, users should install software from official app stores, be vigilant about software, search engines, and browser plug-ins that claim to have functions such as “over-the-wall” and “accelerating internet access”, and do not install or use applications from unknown sources.

——Shape healthy personal network habits. Obtain information through official media and regular platforms, learn to distinguish network rumors and sensitive content, and do not casually browse, comment, or forward unverified overseas information.
