“Don’t be afraid, I’m committing suicide. I really can’t ride anymore, I wanted to find a place with fewer people, nice trees, and good scenery, but I really can’t walk anymore.”
This very moving text is a suicide note. It appeared online, and many people immediately associated the words “can’t ride anymore” with delivery drivers.
Thus, “Chengdu delivery driver commits suicide leaving a suicide note” became a public opinion event. Ultimately, Longquan police issued a notice stating that the suicide was a 25-year-old girl, who was riding a shared bicycle, not delivering food.

This story is even more heartbreaking than “the delivery driver was too tired to ride and committed suicide.”
A girl rode a shared bicycle from the Administrative College subway station on Line 2 at night, along the greenway to Yushi Park, and the police received a report at 3 a.m.

She said “Don’t be afraid” was to remind passersby. Some netizens commented on Weibo that they would not be afraid when passing by here because they knew the girl was a very kind person.
Yes, even when committing suicide, she was still thinking of others. She was just too tired and couldn’t ride anymore.
She was only 25 years old, not long after graduating from university. When I was her age, I was still in graduate school, and I was broke. Once, my younger brother, who was already working, called me and asked if I needed money, and I said, “Give me 300.” He said: What can 300 do? I’ll give you 1000.
That was in 2003. Although I was poor, I could ride, and I could ride my bike from Beijing Normal University to Peking University to attend lectures. I was full of hope.
A few days ago, I read a post where many people recalled the prosperous situation of having several job offers when they graduated more than a decade ago. At that time, the most precious thing was not the job opportunities, but “hope.”
Some people see “can’t ride anymore” and think of delivery drivers, and some people see the girl’s information and think she may lack job opportunities. This is a kind of “association,” but her suicide made it to the trending searches, which is enough to show that the atmosphere of despair is very common.
Young people today have too few opportunities and too little hope.
Today, a friend gave me a resume and recommended a young person to work in a bookstore. A very outstanding master’s degree, the bookstore is not quite worthy—even worse, the bookstore cannot afford more employees.
If a society cannot provide more opportunities for young people, it should at least find ways to provide them with basic life support, such as some subsidies, waiting for the economy to improve.
Cities should give them warmth, let them tell and listen to stand-up comedy; allow those small bookstores to exist, their lights at night can at least give people some warmth.
A society should love young people and wait for young people. Don’t scare them, and don’t deceive them.
