Yesterday, my article criticizing Yang Yong, the mayor of Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, was complained about by him. The complaint said that the article wantonly discussed the media’s objective reports about him, and was therefore deleted. After careful reflection, I hereby apologize to Mayor Yang, who does not allow wanton discussion.
Mayor Yang graduated from Mudanjiang Normal College in 1996 and served as the county magistrate of Qinggang County in 2011. He also served as the secretary of the Qinggang County Party Committee in 2015.
I criticized him because of a propaganda article that some media packaged for him when he was the secretary of the Qinggang County Party Committee in 2018.
The propaganda article stated: Deputy County Magistrate Gao Fujun said that one thing directly made him “experience” Yang Yong’s temper. Once they went to the south to attract investment, the head of a private enterprise was moved by their sincerity and arranged for them to stay in a high-end hotel. When Yang Yong saw the hotel, he immediately turned his face to the accompanying staff and threw the room card on the ground and left.

Yang Yong “immediately turned his face” when he saw the high-end hotel, and also “threw the room card on the ground and left.” He did not ask, did not explain, and was not polite. He directly lost his temper. What a righteous and principled leader, how can he be questioned and criticized?
Mayor Yang complained that these details were all “objective reports” by the media and should not be wantonly discussed.
From Mayor Yang’s complaint, it can be seen that Deputy County Magistrate Gao did not fool the media, and the detail of “directly turning his face and throwing the card” is true.
These true details reflect that Secretary Yang, now Mayor Yang, deeply hates extravagance. Faced with the temptation of a private enterprise owner providing high-end hotel accommodation, Secretary Yang remained unmoved and resolutely not corrupted, and the integrity he displayed is unforgettable.
However, I did not correctly understand these details, but instead mistakenly saw that Secretary Yang was impolite, domineering, and had a high official status.
For a moment, in order to prove that he was impolite and had a high official status, I also very inappropriately analyzed the general environment of attracting investment in recent years.
For example, in the article, it says: The economic situation has been bad in recent years, and it is difficult for all regions to attract investment, especially in economically underdeveloped areas like Heilongjiang, where attracting investment is even more difficult. The economic situation in Qinggang County, where Yang Yong presided over at the time, could not have been much better. In this environment of thirst for investment, many local governments attach great importance to attracting investment. Many local officials go out to attract investment, begging for help, and have to be humble in front of enterprises, in order to attract a good project to promote local economic development, add some vitality to the local area, and also earn some political achievements for themselves. Therefore, in the context of the economic downturn and the increasing difficulty of attracting investment, a county party secretary, in order to attract a good project, would most likely have to rack his brains. If he just turned his face on the spot because the other party arranged a high-end hotel, it would give people the feeling of being very impolite.
The article also wrongly stated: Opposing extravagance is of course good and should be done. If the high-end hotel was paid for by Qinggang County itself, it would exceed the reimbursement standard for business trips, and the secretary should criticize his accompanying staff and correct them. If the enterprise arranged the hotel, he would directly “turn his face and throw the card”, which seems to lack cultivation. If the secretary really feels that it is too extravagant, he should politely explain to the enterprise that he cannot accept the enterprise’s hospitality, and staying in a high-end hotel is also a violation of regulations, and then put down or return the room card to the other party. There is no need to “throw the room card on the ground and leave”. If the other party does not listen to the advice and insists on forcing the secretary to stay in a high-end hotel, it would be reasonable to lose his temper.
Not only did I not correctly understand Secretary Yang Yong’s intolerance of extravagance, but I also wrongly believed that he lacked a sense of overall situation. Therefore, I also wrote the following wrong words in the article: If he just turned his face and lost his temper because the enterprise that was planning to attract investment arranged a high-end hotel for him, then the enterprise would most likely not invest. Then let’s think again, did Yang Yong ruin a good project that was hard to impress the other party and could promote local economic development for his so-called good reputation of “not being extravagant”? If this project eventually failed, it was caused by Yang Yong’s lack of cultivation and lack of overall situation.
Secretary Yang, who hates extravagance so much, should be highly praised and lauded by the media. Now he has been promoted to a level-14 official, and he is even more beyond question and “wanton discussion”.
After deep reflection, I decided to publicly apologize to Mayor Yang.
