The Shanghai Walmart knife-wielding murderer has been arrested.
On the evening of September 30th, in a Walmart store in Songjiang, Shanghai, a knife-wielding assailant repeatedly injured people, resulting in 3 deaths and 15 injuries. The perpetrator committed a heinous crime and was later arrested by SWAT. According to the public security department’s report, the suspect, Lin, committed the act of venting his anger with a knife in Shanghai due to personal economic disputes.
Revenge against society, indiscriminate injury to people.

This vicious case has three particularly noteworthy points:
First, the atmosphere of resentment is very heavy, and one should remain low-key and vigilant when outside.
Under the combined influence of changes in the economic employment situation, the high incidence of mental illness in the post-lockdown era, and the judicial system’s emphasis on “mediation,” the current society is filled with resentment. No one knows when and where a flammable and explosive assailant will appear. In the past year, many vicious public security cases have occurred in various provinces and cities, both reported and hidden. For the sake of account security, I am unable to list them all.
For the readers who are relatives, friends, and those with basic common sense, I want to offer two heartfelt suggestions.
First, when you are outside, you should remain low-key and avoid taking the initiative to provoke trouble, and do not be quick to argue for a vain sense of face. Even if you encounter people with low qualities who provoke you, as long as there is no substantial harm, endure if you can, avoid if you can. Don’t clash with those who are not worth it.
If this were in the past, I would definitely encourage everyone to protect their own rights and interests, uphold social order and justice, and be more assertive to make the environment better. But now, I just hope everyone is safe and sound.
Then, you must remain vigilant. In crowded places, pay attention to observing the environment and noticing people with unusual expressions and behaviors. When traveling alone, avoid being immersed in your phone and promptly avoid dangerous factors in the environment.
Of course, reminding everyone to stay vigilant is not to make you suspicious and jump to conclusions, but to maintain an open and keen awareness in order to respond to sudden environmental situations in a timely manner.
Second, it is important to act bravely at critical moments.
In the Shanghai case of venting anger and murder, it is particularly regrettable that in a place like Walmart, which obviously has young and middle-aged people, the assailant was allowed to stab as many as 18 people with a short knife.

This is not a firearm, nor is it a machete.
This is definitely not because the assailant’s combat effectiveness was so strong, but most likely because everyone at the scene was running away, and no one stopped or stepped forward to fight the assailant, which gave the assailant the opportunity to calmly chase and injure many people.
Attention! I definitely do not mean to encourage everyone to go up and disarm the assailant with bare hands. In fact, people who have not received professional training should not go up and fight an assailant with a weapon.
But! It is unrealistic to disarm the assailant with bare hands, which does not mean we can do nothing but run away…
When encountering an assailant, you can appropriately use items in the environment to block and fight from a distance. Even if it’s just to buy time for your escape, you should try your best to block the assailant’s steps.
In an environment like a Walmart store, shopping carts are easily found “weapons” that can be used for defense to maintain a safe distance, and also for offense to hit the assailant. The bottles and cans on the shelves, even the durians in the fruit counters, can also be used to fight the assailant from a distance.
If there were two or three people at the scene who acted bravely to slightly obstruct the assailant, he would not have stabbed 18 people, and it would not have been necessary to wait for the SWAT to arrive before arresting the assailant.
Here, I appeal to all readers, if you unfortunately encounter a similar situation, please try to use the resources around you to block and subdue the assailant, to buy time for yourself and your relatives and friends to escape, and also to leave room for the arrival of the public security SWAT.
While protecting yourself, try your best to block the assailant, which is also an act of bravery and is of immeasurable merit.
Third, I hope the public security departments of Suzhou and Shenzhen learn from Shanghai’s efficiency.
The case occurred at around 9 p.m., and at around 1 a.m., the Songjiang Public Security Bureau had already preliminarily identified the identity of the murderer, the motive for the crime, and wrote a clear report to respond to concerns and reassure the public.
Timely reporting is very important. The public is urgently concerned about what weapons the assailant had, whether they were caught, and whether they had accomplices. Timely reporting can reassure everyone.
The motive for the crime is even more important. Whether it is murder due to personal hatred or murder due to “ethnic hatred,” whether it is targeted or indiscriminate harm, will affect everyone’s judgment of the safety of the environment.
Disclosing the motive of “revenge against society” may indeed make some people worry, but it is better to worry than to be afraid of the unknown dangers caused by an unclear motive.
Some constructive suggestions:
Since the incident has already happened, publishing detailed information can minimize rumors and speculation, and help the public regain their confidence in safety.
