On August 8, lawyer Yi Shenghua publicly released case materials online regarding a case of theft, insult, and intentional destruction of a corpse. The materials were produced by the Taiyuan City Public Security Bureau of Shanxi Province on May 23 of this year, indicating that the case has been transferred to the Taiyuan City Procuratorate for review and prosecution.

The case materials state that from January 2015 to July 2023, Shanxi Aorui Biological Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Shanxi Aorui Company) allegedly illegally purchased corpses and limbs from Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong, and other places as raw materials. During the purchase and production process, they processed the illegally obtained corpses and bones to produce “allogeneic bone implant materials.” According to audits, the total revenue from 2015 to 2023 reached 380 million yuan. In investigating the case, the police seized over 18 tons of human bone raw materials and semi-finished products, as well as 34,077 finished products from the company.

According to the materials, the case involves the illegal theft and sale of thousands of corpses.

The case materials state that from 2017 to 2019, the suspect, Su, controlled the crematoriums of four funeral homes through methods such as contracting, investing, and stationing personnel. He then instructed his personnel at the crematoriums to steal corpses and brutally dismember them in the cremation workshops before transporting them back to his company. Some corpses were dismembered within his company. Su confessed that the four crematoriums provided his company with over 4,000 human skeletons.

The materials state that there are 75 suspects in the case, all of whom have confessed to the crimes and pleaded guilty. The units involved include Shanxi Aorui Company, Sichuan Hengpu Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Sichuan Hengpu Company), the Liver Disease Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University in Shandong, Guilin Medical University, Guilin Funeral Home, Pingle County Funeral Home, and Yongfu County Funeral Home. In addition, the case also involves the crematoriums of Yunnan Shuifu City, Chongqing Banan District, Guizhou Shiqian County, and Sichuan Daying County, which were controlled by the suspect Su.

On the afternoon of August 8, lawyer Yi Shenghua told The Paper that he obtained the aforementioned case materials from an insider, and the materials are authentic. He stated on Weibo that he is not the defense lawyer for this case.

Regarding the case, The Paper interviewed several relevant departments. A staff member from the office of the Guilin Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau stated that they had previously intervened in the investigation and handling, with the relevant business departments responsible for follow-up.

The company is accused of illegally purchasing corpses and limbs to produce “allogeneic bone” implant materials

The aforementioned case materials state that Shanxi Aorui Company was a subsidiary established by the China Institute of Radiation Protection in 1999. Its business scope is the research, development, production, and sales of “allogeneic bone implant materials,” with Li as the general manager. Starting in 2007, Shanxi Aorui Company gradually acquired shares from Cong (who has been criminally detained and is wanted online) and Su from the China Institute of Radiation Protection and its employees. By 2012, Cong held 54.08% of the shares, making him the largest shareholder and legal representative, serving as chairman. Su held 45.92% of the shares, serving as general manager, and Li was actually responsible for the company’s operations.

From January 2015 to July 2023, Shanxi Aorui Company allegedly illegally purchased corpses and limbs from Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong, and other places as raw materials. During the purchase and production process, they brutally dismembered, removed the skin and flesh, cleaned, and irradiated the illegally obtained corpses and bones to produce “allogeneic bone implant materials.” According to the audit by the Taiyuan Special Commissioner’s Office of the National Audit Office, the sales revenue from 2015 to 2023 totaled 380 million yuan.

From 2015 to 2023, Li, Su, and others, in order to obtain a large amount of raw materials for the production of “allogeneic bone,” instructed employees to go to Guilin, Guangxi, Chengdu, Sichuan, and other places to transport human bones. They screened and processed the corpses at Sichuan Hengpu Company and the Human Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of the Basic Medical College of Guilin Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University), and then loaded the pre-processed bones onto vehicles and drove back to the company for storage.

To conceal the illegal source of the bone raw materials used by Shanxi Aorui Company for the production and processing of “allogeneic bone,” Li arranged for multiple employees to forge materials such as voluntary donation registration forms and inspection reports to prove the legality and safety of the corpse source, and organized most of the company’s employees to falsely sign the family members’ signatures on the voluntary donation registration forms.

In addition, from 2015 to 2021, Li, the associate chief physician of the Liver Disease Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University in Shandong, dismembered the corpses in advance and stored them in a freezer, selling them to Shanxi Aorui Company. He sold over 10 human bone raw materials in total, with a price ranging from 10,000 to 22,000 yuan per unit.

On the morning of August 8, the switchboard operator of the Laoshan campus of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University told The Paper that the campus has a liver transplant center and a liver disease center, which are located together, with the latter being the intensive care unit.

The official website of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University shows that the name of the deputy director of the Organ Transplant Center and the director of the Intensive Care Unit of the Organ Transplant Center is the same as Li.

Subsequently, a reporter from The Paper called the Liver Transplant Center of the Laoshan campus, and the staff on duty said, “Director Li is not here, this is the outpatient clinic. Director Li does not see patients in the outpatient clinic.” When asked whether Li was involved in the case and arrested, the staff member said, “Our Director Li is working fine, who told you that?” After the reporter stated that there were case materials circulating online and revealed their identity, the staff member said that they did not know about this matter, “If you want to ask about this matter, you should go directly to the hospital, don’t call this number.” Subsequently, the reporter called several times, but no one answered the phone.

The suspect is accused of controlling multiple crematoriums to steal corpses, involving over 4,000 human skeletons

The case materials show that Sichuan Hengpu Company is an important source of human bone raw materials for Shanxi Aorui Company.

The case materials state that since 2012, Su has invested in Shanxi Aorui Company, responsible for the company’s human bone raw material supply and the sales of “allogeneic bone” in 13 provinces and cities in the southwest, northeast, and northwest. In 2014, Su established Sichuan Hengpu Company, illegally obtaining corpses and bones for the production and processing of “allogeneic bone” products, and selling some human bones to Shanxi Aorui Company. From 2017 to 2019, in order to expand the source of corpses and limbs, Su controlled the crematoriums of four funeral homes through methods such as contracting, investing, and stationing personnel: the Shuidong Crematorium subsidiary of Shuifu Tianfu Funeral Co., Ltd. in Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, the Xianjushan Funeral Home in Banan District, Chongqing City, the Wangcheng Funeral Service Co., Ltd. in Shiqian County, Tongren City, Guizhou Province, and the Daying County Funeral Home in Suining City, Sichuan Province. He then instructed his personnel at the crematoriums to steal corpses and brutally dismember them in the cremation workshops before transporting them back to Sichuan Hengpu Company. Some corpses were dismembered within Sichuan Hengpu Company. Su confessed that the four crematoriums provided Sichuan Hengpu Company with over 4,000 human skeletons, of which over 1,000 were processed by Shi and Wang, arranged by Zhou Yusheng of Shanxi Aorui Company, and transported back to Shanxi Aorui Company. The remaining human skeletons were pre-processed by the production department employees of Sichuan Hengpu Company and stored in the Xinyuan Cold Storage in Section 2, Konggang 1st Road, Shuangliu District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, and the warehouse of Sichuan Hengpu Company in Pujiang County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province.

Local sources told The Paper that there is only one crematorium in Shuifu, Yunnan, which is managed by Shuifu Tianfu Funeral Co., Ltd., and the bodies from the neighboring city of Yibin, Sichuan, also come here for cremation.

The Paper called the relevant person in charge of the Shuifu Civil Affairs Bureau in Yunnan to verify this matter, and the other party replied: “The higher authorities require our local government to take over, and there are requirements within the industry that we must be managed by our own cadres and employees.”

Tianyan Check shows that Chongqing Banan Xianjushan Funeral Home Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Xianjushan Funeral Home) was established in 2010 and is located in Chongqing, with a registered capital of 5 million yuan. According to local insiders, Xianjushan Funeral Home is a private funeral home, and Wu was once the contractor of the funeral home, who is from Sichuan. He has been arrested for “illegal activities in the funeral business.”

On the afternoon of August 8, The Paper called Wu’s phone, but no one answered. The reporter then called Xianjushan Funeral Home, and the staff immediately hung up the phone upon hearing Wu’s name.

The Paper attempted to contact Sichuan Hengpu Company through the telephone number published by the industrial and commercial information system, but neither of the two landline numbers published by the company were answered. The other mobile phone number belongs to Chengdu, but the person who answered the phone was a woman who said she was currently in Beijing and that her number had been stolen. She did not know about this company.

The experimenter of the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University is accused of selling over three hundred corpses

This case also involves multiple suspects in Guilin, Guangxi.

Regarding this case, a staff member from the office of the Guilin Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau told The Paper that they had previously intervened in the investigation and handling, with the relevant business departments responsible for follow-up.

The case materials show that on September 11, 2023, the National Audit Office conducted a special audit and found that Lan, an experimenter from the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University, sold 322 human skeletons to Shanxi Aorui Company at a price of 10,000 yuan per unit, illegally profiting.

From 2019 to early 2023, Lan and Tian, in order to provide a large amount of bone raw materials to Shanxi Aorui Company, knowing that most of the corpses provided by the Guilin City, Pingle County, and Yongfu County funeral homes to the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University were stolen, still agreed to purchase the corpses at a price of 900 yuan per unit and reached an agreement, with the official seal of Guilin Medical University affixed.

According to articles published by the official website of Guilin Medical University in 2019 and 2020, the director of the Human Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University is named Tian. A staff member from the Basic Medical College of Guilin Medical University said that Tian, the director of the Human Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University, is currently on duty and has not heard of any involvement in the case. When the reporter asked whether there was an experimenter named Lan in the Human Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of the college, the staff member said that they could not disclose it and immediately hung up the phone.

The case materials state that according to statistics, from 2017 to 2023, the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University purchased over 450 corpses from the above three funeral homes, of which about 300 were sold to Shanxi Aorui Company.

The police investigation also showed that the Guilin Funeral Home sold the nameless corpses and the corpses whose family members did not want the ashes to Guilin Medical University, and after preliminary verification, a total of over 200 corpses were sold. The Pingle County Funeral Home did not cremate the corpses whose family members had given up retaining the ashes, but sold them to the Anatomy Teaching and Research Section of Guilin Medical University for profit, and announced the decision at a general staff meeting. After preliminary verification, the Pingle County Funeral Home sold over 180 corpses. Wei Guodong, the executive deputy director of the Yongfu County Funeral Home, knowing that selling the nameless corpses and the corpses whose family members did not want the ashes to others was a criminal act, decided to transport a large number of corpses that had undergone normal cremation procedures and collected cremation fees from the family members to Lan, at a price of 900 yuan per corpse, against the wishes of the family members. After preliminary verification, the Yongfu County Funeral Home sold 73 corpses and profited.

The Paper called the staff of the Guilin Funeral Home and the staff of the Pingle County Funeral Home, and both said they did not know about the case. The staff of the Yongfu County Funeral Home said that the higher-ups were investigating and there were no results, and they did not know the specific information.
