Lianhe Zaobao|Employees of Southern Metropolis Weekly sign to retain Chang Ping

(Guangzhou Comprehensive News)After the news that Chang Ping, deputy editor-in-chief of Guangzhou’s Southern Weekly, will be dismissed, employees of Southern Metropolis Weekly initiated a collective signature campaign in the hope of retaining Chang Ping.

Sources said that in order to deal with pressure from superiors, the decision of Nanfang Media Group to remove Chang Ping from the position of deputy editor-in-chief has been made, and Chang Ping still retains the title of chief writer.

Radio Free Asia quoted sources reporting that the reporters and editors of Southern Metropolis Weekly believe that Chang Ping is an excellent leader. They feel they need to express their opinions about the removal of this leader. Staff said that Chang Ping’s name is still printed on the latest issue of Southern Metropolis Weekly.

According to a senior media person in Guangzhou who did not want to reveal his name, the reason for Chang Ping’s dismissal is not just his comment. Recently, media under Nanfang Media Group published reports about child laborers in Sichuan being sold to Dongguan, Guangdong, and they also reported on Chengdu citizens collectively walking to protest the construction of a chemical plant. The relevant parties are dissatisfied with these negative reports from Nanfang Media and Chang Ping’s comments. In order to deal with pressure from superiors, Nanfang Media has to find a scapegoat. However, this media person emphasized that Nanfang Media Group is quite experienced in handling such incidents, and they will try to protect the personnel being dealt with.
