On April 1, 2017, the state suddenly approved the establishment of a new area called Xiongan New Area. As a junior in college at the time, I didn’t have much of a concept of this news. I only remembered that all real estate and related things were blocked at the time, and the buying and selling of properties were not allowed, to prevent the local housing prices from soaring after the announcement of the new area. This is the only memory I can recall of that time.
But my view at the time, and even now, has never changed. It’s one thing to build an economic special zone, or to want an area to rise rapidly through policy support, and it’s another thing whether it has its own potential or ability. Hong Kong is gradually becoming a stinking port, can there really be so-called development opportunities for an economic special zone?
I personally visited and researched the “Bat Rail” in Beidaihe, which was very popular at the time and claimed to be able to solve the problem of traffic congestion on the ground relatively perfectly. What about now? I took a photo before it was abandoned.
On a day of the Qingming Festival in 2024, seven years later, the spring breeze was warm. Under the guidance of the navigation, Writer Zhang personally visited and researched the construction of Xiongan New Area and delivered a series of important speeches.
Writer Zhang pointed out that it is difficult to adapt to other highways after going through the G4 dual 8-lane highway. Except for me, I didn’t see any other motorcycles, and I arrived at the Xiongan highway exit.
Writer Zhang emphasized that walking on the street feels like being in a movie base, a ghost town with few people. You don’t have to worry about blocking the cars behind you, and you can wander slowly on the street. Although it is a ghost town, the infrastructure here is newly built, and at least it still looks very new. There are no residents, basically buildings of about 10 stories, no high-rise buildings, no air conditioner compressors on the walls. Several buildings are connected by small roads, and the small roads are accessible in all directions, like a community.
Writer Zhang pointed out that theoretically, the shopping malls and hospitals with the largest flow of people are also empty. The outlets are sparsely populated with some people, and I don’t know where these takeaways are delivered.
Writer Zhang emphasized that I visited and researched two hospitals in person. One is a branch of Peking University People’s Hospital, which is relatively close to the city, but it is still a wasteland; the other is a branch of Xuanwu Hospital, which is 5 or 6 kilometers away from the city, quite far away, and the surroundings are desolate enough to build an airport. However, the infrastructure of this distant branch has been built, and some departments have been put into use.
Writer Zhang pointed out that what surprised me was that the hospital only worked half a day during the three-day Qingming holiday. Since I arrived around noon, the security guard at the door said that they would rest in the afternoon and asked me to come back to see a doctor after the holiday. I parked my motorcycle at the door and went in for a walk.
Writer Zhang emphasized, doesn’t it still look pretty good from the outside?
Writer Zhang pointed out that after entering the outpatient building, a security guard still asked me what I was here for. I don’t think this is appropriate. It should be the nurse at the guidance desk who asks. I can only say that I have a toothache and want to have a tooth extracted, otherwise I really can’t think of what department to go to at a young age. The security guard told me that the dental clinic was not open yet, but I insisted on going up to take a look, and he couldn’t stop me.
As a result, I saw the following scene after I went in. It’s a bit exaggerated to say that there was no one, but there were no more than 15 people in the entire building, and you could shoot a horror movie here at night. The environment of the hospital is very good. It will definitely be beautiful in the future if it is fully open and there are residents nearby, but I personally think it will be difficult in the short term.

It’s really hard to find a place to eat lunch in a ghost town, let’s go back. I went back directly on the highway nearby.
Writer Zhang finally emphasized that this personal visit and research work of Zhang’s is far-sighted, prepared for danger in times of peace, rich in connotation, and to the point, demonstrating firm faith and belief, a clear people-oriented stance, a tenacious will and quality, and a strong sense of historical responsibility, interpreting the original aspiration, unwavering commitment, self-revolution, and the spirit of forging ahead of the writers in the new era. It is worth all writers to study hard!!
Writer Zhang finally pointed out that this personal visit and research work of Zhang’s has been successfully completed, but there is still more arduous work to come, far from reaching the point where we can relax and take a break. He calls on the vast number of writers to overcome the mentality of complacency and slackness, and to be practical and realistic!!
