The other day, my WeChat Moments was flooded with a lengthy article titled “See Rugao at the Beginning of the Year: Three Pillars, Ten Strong Contenders!”

Such an article attempts to create a vibrant and upward-trending Rugao. I read it carefully twice. Using a vivid analogy, through this article, I see not a thriving young man, but a middle-aged uncle with a big belly and a slightly bald head.

To put it bluntly, in this lengthy article, what I feel is greasiness, not vitality.

2024 is a crucial year for striving for the economy, stabilizing growth, and promoting development. We must select benchmarks, find opponents, learn from advanced experiences, and catch up with the gap, competing on the track of high-quality development. We cannot sit still, we cannot wait, and we cannot be slow! A thousand tricks and ten thousand methods, if not implemented, are empty tricks; a thousand and ten thousand rules, if not implemented, are blank checks.” (Italics are the original text quoted, the same below)

2024 is a crucial year for striving for the economy, stabilizing growth, and promoting development. What year were 2023 and 2022? Which year wasn’t crucial? Which year didn’t need to “strive for the economy, stabilize growth, and promote development”?

Since the beginning of the year, Rugao has successively made high-level deployments for major project construction, major economic indicators, and high-quality assessment systems. It has refined the goals to the plateaus and parks, accelerated the improvement and strict implementation of the project construction rankings and other evaluation mechanisms, and played a good role as an assessment “weather vane” and a supervision “accelerator”, ensuring that the central work is promoted wherever it goes, and the assessment and supervision follow wherever it goes, to ensure the implementation of the municipal party committee’s various decision-making deployments, and to fully create a strong atmosphere of striving for excellence and surpassing others.

This paragraph was originally fine, but after adding the words “since the beginning of the year”, it will make people wonder: How was it done before? Were the previous assessments and supervisions just going through the motions? Were the previous atmospheres not good?

Striving for production capacity, grabbing orders

The person who wrote this point basically doesn’t understand the market, nor does he understand the economy, and his understanding of the market economy is extremely naive. I only ask one question: Didn’t those companies that collapsed in 2023 “strive for production capacity and grab orders”?

Striving for projects, comparing environments

This theme is written with high spirits. Do you really think the people of Rugao haven’t seen the ranking of Nantong’s project construction assessment not long ago?

With clear goals, one can go far. Practicing the spirit of ‘four dares’, ‘dare’ to ask where the road is? Crossing the Yangtze River to find opponents, Rugao raises its positioning and broadens its horizons, setting the goal of learning and catching up with Taicang.

The slogan of “comprehensive benchmarking of Zhangjiagang” has been shouted for many years. Now the goal has been changed to Taicang. Is it because we have already surpassed Zhangjiagang and are looking for a new goal, or is it because we have found that we cannot surpass Zhangjiagang and must find a new goal?

……

I once talked to relevant leaders that Rugao’s external publicity lacks depth and lacks ideological output. Such a “masterpiece” at the beginning of the year has been written to this level, which completely validates my view.

The writers of these articles have mastered the essence of “I am not embarrassed, the embarrassed one is others”. They start by saying “striving” for the economy, which is of course correct, but it’s a bit off, because we have always been striving for the economy.

According to the meaning of this article, Rugao should now step on the accelerator pedal and solve all the problems in development. If things were that simple, we wouldn’t have to pay so much tuition.

This article neither points out the problems that Rugao has in its previous development, nor does it point out new paths or new directions.

After holding back for a long time, only the word “striving” came out. Does it mean that Rugao didn’t strive in the past, or didn’t strive enough, or does it mean that the surrounding brother cities are not striving? If everyone is striving, what is Rugao’s advantage? If we were also striving in the past, then what is the difference between the “striving” of the new year and the past?

Of course, it is also possible that Rugao has not been “striving” hard enough in the past few years, so this year we need to particularly emphasize “striving”. If this is the case, this article lacks a pretext. You need to clarify the previous problems and then emphasize the key to solving the problems.

“If you work hard, you will win”, a song I’ve been listening to since I was a child. Today, we still have to emphasize the word “striving” in a long and tedious way, which is really promising.

Yesterday, @Chongchuan Online also pushed an article of similar status. Just comparing these two articles, you will find that their goals are clearer, and their paths of development are clearer, unlike us, which is just a simple and empty “striving”. Compared to our image of a greasy middle-aged uncle, they are more like a smart, clear-minded, and wise new youth.

Writing this, I think of an online meme: no matter what Guan Yu says, Zhang Fei follows with the sentence “Me too”.

Earlier, I mentioned the image of a greasy middle-aged uncle. I think that when a city develops to a certain stage, it is the same as a person, it will be greasy. After a period of rapid development, the spirited energy of the past is gone, and the first words are a kind of stale breath, which is the breath after the food residue of yesterday or even the day before yesterday has fermented in the crevices of the teeth.

What does a greasy temperament look like? Someone online has simply summarized three points.

1. Showing off, super showing off. In their words, they are the most handsome, the most awesome, and the most powerful in the world, but they themselves don’t have the capital to show off.

2. Exaggeration, behavior and actions are embarrassing. Everyone is moving forward normally, and he suddenly comes up with a dance, and he still thinks he is very sexy and attractive.

3. Lack of curiosity, creativity, and desire for knowledge. Whatever you do, you first look at the existing frameworks and box yourself in.

A few days ago, we had two articles talking about emotional intelligence. In fact, there is also an emotional intelligence problem in external publicity. A good article for external publicity should be able to provide emotional value to the audience, let the audience feel your sincerity, rather than being self-moved to tears and snot, and then asking the people, “Why aren’t you moved?”

I don’t understand who this article is trying to write for. Saying it in such a flowery way, what do you want those people whose salaries and bonuses have been reduced to think? Talking so much about “striving”, what do you want those grassroots staff who are busy with S-on-sculpting to think… Has anyone thought about it, who can this article resonate with?

Yesterday, I saw a friend’s evaluation of this article, which is very vivid:

We have many recitation artists in Rugao. We can really try to hold a themed recitation meeting for this lengthy article.
