In the past few days, an article by Li Xunlei, chief economist of Zhongtai Securities, has been widely circulated in the media. I took a look at it. This article mainly talks about some old topics, such as real estate, population aging, insufficient consumption, etc. When it comes to income issues, it cites data from the Institute of Income Distribution of Beijing Normal University in 2021:
About 964 million people have a monthly income of less than 2,000 yuan.

Soon, “More than 900 million people earn less than 2,000 yuan per month” topped the Weibo hot search. When I saw it, it seemed to be the first hot search. It seems that everyone is still very concerned about income. Of course, this data certainly cannot lead to the conclusion that more than 900 million people’s wages are less than 2,000 yuan, because these 900 million people include everyone whose income is below 2,000.
For example, if we calculate that a university graduate is 22 years old, according to population data, we have 440 million people under the age of 22. These 440 million people are likely to have an income of less than 2,000, after all, they are still in school; there are also many elderly people who have withdrawn from the labor market and rely on themselves to grow their own land to support themselves, and their monthly income is likely to be less than 2,000.
Excluding these people, the remaining labor force population, what is the monthly income of this part of the population? In 2021, Ms. Dong once suggested raising the personal income tax threshold from 5,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan. This later triggered a lot of controversy, and many institutions have investigated the changes in the population that meet the standards after the change of the threshold.
On August 31, 2018, we officially raised the personal income tax threshold from 3,500 yuan per month to 5,000 yuan per month. According to the data given by CITIC Securities that year, if calculated according to the personal income tax threshold of 5,000 yuan, the population that meets the threshold is about 64 million. The Ministry of Finance also conducted a statistical analysis, after raising the personal income tax threshold to 5,000 yuan:
The proportion of personal income tax payers to urban employed persons will drop from the current 44% to 15%.
You can think about what this sentence means. This data is similar to the data given by Shanghai University of Finance and Economics later. Of course, some people may say that this is the data from 2018, how can it represent the situation five years later. It really can’t represent it, and I haven’t found the latest data. At this time, we have to introduce the words of the well-known anchor Li Jiaqi: Has the salary increased in the past five years?
The most popular person on the Internet recently, I believe everyone has seen it in their Moments, is a middle-aged man named Wen Huijun. This elder brother’s main job is to be a coach at a driving school, and his hobbies are dancing and posting emo Moments copywriting at night. I don’t know why he suddenly became popular:
His main account gained 4.7 million fans, the account that posted emo copywriting gained 1.7 million fans, and the driving school account also had nearly 1 million fans, adding up to nearly 7 million fans.
After this elder brother’s traffic came, he immediately started a live broadcast. On December 18, the number of viewers for two accounts and two live broadcasts exceeded 25 million. On December 19, the number of live broadcast viewers exceeded 37 million. It is said that in this live broadcast, netizens swiped 6,000 carnivals.
Someone calculated that each carnival anchor can get 1,400 yuan after receiving it, 6,000 carnivals, that is, more than 8 million yuan, and thus a legendary story spread throughout the Internet:
The elder brother made more than 8 million yuan in one night.
The next day, an even more outrageous hot search came out, saying that the elder brother actually made 100 million yuan. Of course, this 100 million yuan is platform currency. If converted into cash, it is estimated to be more than 10 million yuan. This income not only beats many ordinary people, but also directly beats the data of many listed companies.
In fact, according to the number of viewers of more than 30 million, each person who comes to the scene gives five cents, which is more than 15 million yuan. So, specifically, the income of more than 8 million yuan in one night looks very shocking, but combined with the number of viewers, does it seem normal?
The Internet never lacks stories of wealth creation, just as the lottery circle never lacks stories of fortune. In my opinion, this kind of Internet traffic and the wealth of the lottery circle are the same, a game that truly belongs to luck.
But this kind of thing and data of several million yuan a night, if you brush it every day and watch it too much, a phenomenon will arise:
No concept of money.
For example, you may not have 100,000 yuan in your pocket, but you feel that a house of two or three million yuan seems to be quite cheap, and a mobile phone of less than 10,000 yuan seems to be not expensive. This is because you have no concept of money, because when you brush the Internet, everyone seems to have it, which is a standard configuration. In the past, children had no concept of money, and now people who often surf the Internet and often see these stories of several million yuan a night have no concept of money.
The consequences of not having a concept of money are very direct. Speaking of large items, a house of two or three million yuan is just a small necessity, and a car of two or three hundred thousand yuan is just a means of transportation, both of which are necessities of life; speaking of small items, giving a 520 yuan red envelope on your birthday, according to some sayings, giving 520 is not as good as giving her freedom, so the starting price has to be 5,200 yuan, and the standard configuration has to be 52,000 yuan; a bag of a few thousand yuan is also considered not to be loved, and you can’t take out 10,000 yuan to talk about love.
So many people should be very curious, in a society where more than 900 million people have a monthly income of less than 2,000 yuan and only about 10% of the labor force meets the personal income tax threshold of 5,000 yuan, how can this phenomenon of giving a 520 yuan red envelope is not as good as giving her freedom appear?
Actually, I’m also curious, and friends who know the situation can analyze it.
