Wen Xiaodao’s article | Congratulations to Shi Zhengli for being confirmed as an academician candidate

This morning, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering respectively announced the lists of valid candidates for the 2023 academician election. Among the above lists, Yan Ning of Tsinghua University and Shi Zhengli of the Wuhan Institute of Virology are included.

Who is Yan Ning, I don’t need to say more, I have often mentioned her in previous articles. The article “Yan Ning deleted a classmate for the “chained woman”, I saw the awakening of intellectuals” has gained the recognition of many friends. Those who are not very familiar with Yan Ning can click on the blue title to read it.

Before talking about Shi Zhengli, let’s first look at Shi Zhengli’s recommender—Shu Hongbing.

Shu Hongbing is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is currently the Dean of the Institute of Medicine of Wuhan University, the Dean of the Wuhan Institute of Biotechnology… There are too many titles, so I won’t list them all.

Shu Hongbing has an “enemy” named Rao Yi. When Rao Yi returned from overseas studies with many achievements in the field of scientific research, he went to participate in the academician election with high spirits. As a result, he was eliminated in the first round, while Shu Hongbing, who was originally not comparable to Rao Yi, eventually won the honor of academician. After that, Rao Yi announced that he would no longer participate in the academician election. By the way, Shi Yigong, who was also well-known, was also eliminated that time. He was slightly better than Rao Yi, at least he made it to the second round.

Shu Hongbing had a student named Wang Yanyi. After the two, who were fourteen years apart, quickly became familiar with each other, they climbed to the top of knowledge together. As the sparks of love bloomed, they entered the marriage hall, and she became his fourth wife. Wang Yanyi is currently the director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She made all the efforts for epidemic prevention in those three years, which we all see.

In early 2020, the epidemic made people panic. A Chinese medicine that had not undergone clinical trials became an overnight “hit”. The public began to frantically buy Shuanghuanglian Oral Liquid, and someone also gained the title of “Mother of Shuanghuanglian”. This storm also brought Rao Yi and Shu Hongbing together again.

In 2019, Rao Yi publicly reported academic fraud by Pei Gang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Geng Meiyu, the director of the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, and Li Hongliang, a professor at Wuhan University. Li Hongliang works at Wuhan University, and Shu Hongbing also works there; Geng Meiyu and Wang Yanyi jointly researched that Shuanghuanglian Oral Liquid has an inhibitory effect on the virus. It’s all a coincidence, it’s all just a coincidence, it can only be a coincidence.

After the Shuanghuanglian incident, Rao Yi pointed the finger at Wang Yanyi. Rao Yi wrote a letter to Shu Hongbing, listing three reasons why Wang Yanyi was not suitable to be the director, and asked Shu Hongbing to persuade Wang Yanyi to resign. The three reasons are: 1. Not in line with the profession, 2. Poor level, 3. Too young.

Rao Yi also said in the letter, “For the good of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and for your own good!” These words were well-founded and earnest, but as the recipient, I think it would definitely be very uncomfortable.

Back to the point, let’s talk about today’s protagonist, Shi Zhengli.

Regarding the origin of the virus, there is a person’s name that can never be avoided, that is Shi Zhengli.

Shi Zhengli is currently a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the director of the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and the deputy director of the Wuhan P4 laboratory. Because of her dedication to the study of bat genes, Shi Zhengli has the title of “Bat Woman”.

In July 2018, Shi Zhengli gave a public speech on the topic of “Tracking the Source of SARS”, telling about her hard work in finding the source of the SARS virus from bats.

Since the outbreak of the new coronavirus in 2019, in the eyes of the outside world, there seems to be a kind of connection between Shi Zhengli and the new coronavirus.

As Shi Zhengli, who has long been engaged in the study of bat viruses, naturally could not escape the questioning of the outside world. For a while, she was pushed to the forefront of public opinion, and some people even suspected that the virus might be related to her.

Shi Zhengli responded firmly in a post: The new coronavirus in 2019 is a punishment from nature for humanity’s uncivilized habits. I, Shi Zhengli, guarantee with my life that it has nothing to do with the laboratory. Advise those who believe and spread rumors from bad media… Shut your mouths.

Shi Zhengli’s guarantee with her life, to this day, has not completely shattered the rumors of the US military games poisoning, the leak from the Ukrainian laboratory, and everything related to her.

Not only ordinary people, but also doubts from the scientific community, including Dr. Wu Xiaohua, who also belongs to the field of life sciences, publicly confronted Shi Zhengli. According to Wu Xiaohua, “Shi Zhengli openly lied, losing the most basic element of a researcher.” When public opinion was at its center, Shi Zhengli was also rumored to have “defected”. She responded again in person: No matter how difficult it is, the situation in the “defection” rumor will not happen. We have done nothing wrong, we have a firm belief in science in our hearts.

Regarding the origin of the virus, Shi Zhengli admitted: The new coronavirus is very cunning, and the origin and host will never be found.

As a non-virus field professional, I am not qualified and capable of judging Shi Zhengli’s professional matters. I just hope she can tell us what “the new coronavirus is a punishment from nature for humanity’s uncivilized habits” refers to. Can it be more specific, so that we can learn from it? In addition, I look forward to the origin and host finally being found, and to restore the truth to the world, even if the probability is very small. Scientists’ words are advised not to use too absolute words!

I don’t know if it’s fortunate or unfortunate. If it weren’t for those three years, Shi Zhengli, throughout her life, would probably only be known within the professional circle at most. And now, her name is almost known to everyone.

However, one thing I can be sure of is that meeting Shu Hongbing and his wife is definitely her fortune. One is her recommender, and the other is the director of the recommending unit. These two are definitely discerning people, with no selfishness at all, and are true scientists who put all their thoughts into academic research.

Finally, I still want to congratulate Shi Zhengli for being confirmed as a candidate for academician, and I hope she can be elected as she wishes. The last time I congratulated like this was “Maotai Academician”, but unfortunately he was not elected.

In conclusion, I spent nearly eight hours writing an article yesterday, but I couldn’t publish it. I modified it for about an hour, but it still failed to send. I was dizzy and simply gave up. So I rewrote another one and casually talked about it. It was published, but the original and the reward were gone. So, I can only delete it and repost it on a small account.

I’m also completely convinced. Either it can’t be published, or it can be published but there’s no reward. What do you want to do? Just don’t let me write? I just won’t compromise, and I just won’t give up! I won’t complain anymore, I just can’t help but want to say a few words, otherwise I’ll be suffocated. I hope you will forgive me.

Yesterday at noon, I finally managed to renew the loan I owed for another year, I can’t remember whether it’s the fifth or the sixth year. Today, I implore everyone to give me a reward to encourage me. It’s been too tiring and difficult these years.
