The situation is a bit complicated|We plan to issue 1,000 global warming atonement bonds to high-temperature workers

We will drive a global warming atonement car and randomly distribute it to 1,000 high-temperature workers on the streets. Each person can receive a 100 yuan atonement voucher (which can be used to purchase 100 yuan worth of cooling items at designated convenience stores).

We will simultaneously invite the 30 companies involved in this atonement to participate in the donation of the “Global Warming High Temperature Fund“, which will be for high-temperature workers, including providing high-temperature insurance, compensation for deaths caused by high temperatures, legal aid, and so on. If more companies want to participate in creating the “Global Warming High Temperature Fund”, please contact us: nutbrother\@gmail.com     WeChat jianguoxiongdi   (Brother Nuts)

We hope to form a consensus through action; to eliminate wait-and-see attitudes through action; to encourage action through action.

Execution time: July-August

Execution location: Streets of a certain city

Sanitation workers: They have to bend over thousands of times every day, and their clothes are almost always wet and dry, dry and wet again

img

“One of us is responsible for an area of about 200 meters. Actions like bending over to sweep and pick up trash have to be repeated thousands of times a day. This job doesn’t last long for lazy people,” said Li Qingsong. Although the outdoor temperature is very high, sanitation workers are still “fully armed”: work clothes, long pants, sports shoes, and despite wearing a wide-brimmed cloth hat, their faces are still tanned. After a day, their clothes are almost always wet and dry, dry and wet again.

Delivery guys: They drink six or seven liters of water a day to fight high temperatures and prevent heatstroke. The electric car is scalding hot, and their butts are burning

img

At noon, when the temperature is highest, it is also the busiest time for delivery rider Dong Wei to deliver meals. His clothes are soaked, and when he parks his electric car on the side of the road and waits to get the meal and then sits on it, he “explodes” immediately as if he has been poured with boiling water, and his butt is burning hot. Hu Hu is a part-time female rider. After drinking a bottle of ice water, dysmenorrhea troubles her, and the warm palace patch burned several blisters on her belly, and scars still remain.

Qi He is a delivery guy who usually runs orders near Xihongmen, Daxing, Beijing. In the past two weeks, Beijing has entered a “high-temperature mode” that is often 40 degrees Celsius, so he can only fight the high temperature and prevent heatstroke by drinking a lot of water. “I drink four or five barrels of 1.5-liter large bottles of mineral water, which cost 2 yuan each,” said Qi He.

Delivery guys like Qi He are now the main group of outdoor workers in the city. According to a report from Yicai, the Meituan platform had 6.24 million riders in 2022. In addition to delivery personnel, outdoor workers such as express delivery personnel, sanitation workers, and construction workers all need to face high temperatures directly. Under the historical high temperatures, they are all facing a huge “test.”

Heat waves are a deadly phenomenon that can “kill people invisibly”

When the human body temperature continues to be above 40°C and does not go down,

Symptoms such as convulsions, coma, and multiple organ failure may occur,

Even death can occur, with a mortality rate of up to 50% for heatstroke.

40℃、49℃、55℃……

We are directly bearing the consequences of climate pollution in this generation.

Extreme high temperatures are not isolated events; the root of the “burning” of the Earth lies in the overall trend of global warming. A recent study published by Scientific American shows that when humans are exposed to extreme high temperatures, their central nervous system, brain, and other important organs will be affected, and the effects will appear very quickly, leading to heatstroke, heat cramps, and so on.

Entering July, high temperatures of 40°C have returned to Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and other places. Under the scorching sun, outdoor activities are like being in a furnace. Shanxi, Xinjiang, and other places are “hot to the point of distortion.” The southern sauna days are online. The body temperature in southeastern Zhejiang, central and southern Jiangxi, and other places may reach 40°C, and the minimum temperature at night is mostly around 27°C, as if in a large steamer, “hot to the point of melting.” Shenzhen has already had 62 people calling 120 for emergency treatment due to heatstroke, of which 2 have died.

July 6th, the hottest day on Earth. The University of Maine Climate Reanalyzer reported that the Earth broke the hottest record in 120,000 years three times in the past week. As the El Niño phenomenon intensifies, these extreme temperatures are expected to continue, adding more heat to the Earth’s system.

img

The website Climate Reanalyzer created by the Climate Institute of the University of Maine in the United States shows the average temperature map of the Earth on July 6th.

Currently, the high-temperature heat wave named “Cerberus” is sweeping across the European continent. Most parts of Europe have broken temperature records this week, which are 5 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the average level. As the scorching heat wave continues, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe will continue to welcome record-breaking high temperatures. According to reports, in the next few days, the temperature in Sardinia and Sicily, Italy, will rise to 49 degrees Celsius, which will be the “highest temperature ever recorded in Europe.”

img
img

In the United States, in June, thousands of dead fish were washed ashore along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Texas due to the warming of seawater, resulting in lower oxygen content.

img
img

Indian officials said that in recent days, about 170 people have died in the scorching heat waves in the two most populous states in India, hospitals are crowded with patients, and daily power outages have also exacerbated the challenges.

The risk of death for high-temperature workers on the streets needs to be seen.

Compared to the rich, the poor and vulnerable groups are more likely to be harmed by high temperatures. If this year’s high temperatures break records again, Asia is likely to experience excess deaths and premature deaths caused by heat stress. Those who stay indoors with air conditioning, take cars, order takeout, and the wealthy may easily avoid high temperatures in various ways. “But more people have to face the scorching sun,” warned Dr. Katie MacQuaid, an anthropologist who focuses on the impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, in an interview with The Paper. The recent extreme heat waves will further deepen the suffering of vulnerable groups under the impact of climate change.

Many high-temperature workers know how difficult it is to work under such conditions, but they have no choice but to continue working. Scientists have been warning for years about the adverse effects of rising temperatures on the environment: extreme weather, natural disasters, damage to plant and animal communities… However, few people care about the risks that millions of workers around the world face in their work.

Although everyone may be harmed by extreme high temperatures, outdoor workers are the most vulnerable. Entrepreneurs may lose their businesses due to the economic downturn, but they can definitely save their lives. But a worker who works in high temperatures will lose his life.

Globally, even if capital insists on the anti-human efficiency-first ideology, believing that street workers are just machines that create profits for it, we must remember that they are ordinary people like us.

Workers who work outdoors must endure all kinds of bad weather, including high temperatures and heavy rain. Although we are in such an advanced and developed era, we still seem helpless in the face of such terrible high temperatures. In fact, the situation of outdoor workers has hardly improved. Every new summer, their risk of death increases. Their fate is linked to the fate of the environment, and the destruction of the environment is also seriously affecting the lives of workers. What is pressing on the workers’ heads is not only the terrible high temperature, but also the pressure of supporting their families, which makes them always in a state of insufficient income. You can see that work is very important to them. They must work to live. They have no choice but to continue working because the dilemma of survival is in front of them. Street high-temperature workers need more attention, not praise, and their voices need to be heard.

Currently, it is the moment of the most global carbon emissions

Robert Rohde, chief scientist of the non-profit organization Berkeley Earth, predicts that the world is likely to encounter more record-breaking high temperatures in the next six weeks. “Global warming is taking us to an unfamiliar world.”

Global warming is an undeniable fact. According to the annual climate report released by the World Meteorological Organization in 2023, the global temperature in 2022 was 1.15°C higher than the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900. After the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, global economic activity is in a process of rapid recovery. Wei Ke, an associate researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that the carbon emissions in 2021 and 2022 increased rapidly, and the amount far exceeded the previous two years. It can be said that this is currently the moment of the most global carbon emissions. Today, the impact of human production and life on the Earth’s environment and ecology has exceeded the natural process itself, and has brought the Earth’s evolution into a completely different stage. If we do not make any changes and do not seize the opportunity to switch to a green and low-carbon path, by 2100, the warming caused by humans will reach more than 4°C. This will far exceed the goal of the “Paris Agreement.” The “Paris Agreement” concerns the global response to climate change after 2020, and its entry into force is a key step in the global response to climate change.

Humans are burning fossil fuels and emitting greenhouse gases, 50 times faster than the natural warming rate after the last ice age

The climate science community is full of confidence in these assertions because observations show that the temperatures of the past ten years have been the hottest since the 1800s. In addition, analysis of proxy data such as tree rings and ice cores shows that the Earth’s average temperature has never been so warm since the end of the ice age 20,000 years ago.

The current rate of warming is unparalleled in the past 20,000 years. Since the Industrial Revolution, the Earth’s average temperature has risen by 1.2 degrees Celsius. Surprisingly, it is expected that humans will cause the same degree of warming in just 200 years by burning fossil fuels and emitting greenhouse gases, which is 50 times faster than the natural warming rate after the last ice age.

According to research, the temperature has been relatively stable for the past 10,000 years, and human civilization has flourished. However, if carbon emissions are not curbed, the Earth is expected to warm up another degree by the middle of this century, similar to the temperature of the last interglacial period 125,000 years ago. If emissions continue unabated, the world may experience the hottest temperatures in a million years by the end of this century.

Beware of corporate greenwashing

At the beginning of 2021, the European Commission first announced a network scanning data focusing on “greenwashing”, and the results showed that 42% of online marketing products in the EU region were suspected of exaggerating or deceiving environmental claims. In addition, according to media reports, several energy giants, including ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and Saudi Aramco, have spent $10.9 million on advertising for “greenwashing” in the past two years and have been questioned by the industry.

2022 China Greenwashing List, Tesla, Sanyuan Foods, Huatong Co., Xinhua Pharmaceutical, New Hope, China Railway Stock, China Shenhua, SHEIN, H&M  9 companies on the list.

The “China Bank Insurance News” mentioned in a special article on combating counterfeiting that the main ways for companies to “dye green”, “wash green”, and “greenwash” in “green finance” include: fabricating or forging green projects and related supporting materials; packaging the entire enterprise (project) as a green enterprise (project) with a single small and micro green project; financing in the name of green environmental protection projects, but the actual use of funds is not invested in green projects, etc.

In the past half century, the greenhouse gases produced by the world’s 20 fossil fuel companies account for one-third of the world’s total carbon emissions

An article in the British “Guardian” revealed that the greenhouse gases produced by the world’s 20 fossil fuel companies in the past half century account for one-third of the world’s total carbon emissions.

The report cited the latest data analysis from the US Climate Responsibility Institute, from 1965 to 2017, the world’s 20 fossil fuel companies continuously extracted oil, natural gas and coal, producing 35% of the world’s carbon dioxide and methane, equivalent to 480 billion tons of carbon emissions.

The “Guardian” pointed out that the purpose of this study is to shift the focus of public discussion on carbon emission responsibility from “individuals are responsible” to “enterprises should bear the majority of the responsibility.”

Climate scientist Michael Mann said that this analysis highlights the role of fossil fuel companies in global warming and called for urgent action at the climate change conference to be held in Chile in December. He said, the biggest tragedy of the climate crisis is that 7.5 billion people around the world must pay the price of the deterioration of the Earth’s environment, while dozens of polluting companies continue to make huge profits.

The 20 companies with the largest cumulative carbon emissions (calculated from 1965) are:

1) Saudi Aramco (4.38%)

2) Chevron (3.20%)

3) Gazprom (3.19%)

4) ExxonMobil (3.09%)

5) National Iranian Oil Company (2.63%)

6) British BP (2.51%)

7) Dutch Shell (2.36%)

8) Coal India (1.71%)

9) Pemex (1.67%)

10) PDVSA (1.16%)

11) PetroChina (1.15%)

12) Peabody Energy (1.14%)

13) ConocoPhillips (1.12%)

14) ADNOC (1.01%)

15) Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (1.00%)

16) Iraqi National Oil Company (0.93%)

17) TotalEnergies (0.91%)

18) Sonatrach (0.91%)

19) BHP Billiton (0.72%)

20) Petrobras (0.64%)

Climate pollution atonement list two

95% of China’s A-share listed companies have not actively and effectively disclosed carbon emissions

As of June 2023, there are only more than 500 A-share listed companies that have actively disclosed their own carbon data. Among them, only 282 companies can actually use the data for investment institutions, accounting for less than 5%.

The practical significance of high-quality carbon disclosure by listed companies is: on the one hand, because the true and accurate carbon emission data is the basis for trading in the national carbon market, the disclosure of basic data required for corporate carbon accounting should be more transparent, open, and complete; on the other hand, high-quality disclosure of carbon emission information helps to guide capital flows, enabling the public to grasp the true emission situation of corporate greenhouse gases, and help companies achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

By industry, the total emissions of China’s power, cement, and steel industries are relatively larger.
