On May 30, a reporter from Jimu News was beaten by several people of unknown identity while interviewing the incident of “two teachers drowned due to the release of water from a hydropower station” in Zhijin County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province.
The incident of the reporter being beaten has aroused widespread concern from all walks of life.
According to relevant information, on April 13 this year, two teachers in Zhijin County, Bijie, Guizhou, were picking up pebbles by the river and were swept away and drowned by the flood released from the reservoir.
The family members of the deceased said that they learned afterwards that a superior leader had come to the school to inspect and found that the kindergarten of the school lacked local elements in its decoration, mentioning that pebbles could be used to decorate it, and later the school leaders arranged for teachers to pick up pebbles when they had time.
Regarding the family’s statement, the relevant person in charge of the local area denied it in an interview with the media before, “It was all the personal behavior of those teachers, and it was caused by their private play in the river.”
On May 30, a reporter from Jimu News was sent by the newspaper he worked for to the scene to interview and try to restore the process of the tragedy.
At about 2 p.m. that day, the reporter came to Budi Village and was questioned by a man driving an Audi; later, the man called the police and said “I met a liar.” After the police arrived, the reporter identified himself, and the police then let him go.
At about 4 p.m. that day, the reporter came to Majia Village again to visit the reservoir involved. Near the hydropower station, a van tracking the reporter blocked the reporter’s way.
The reporter got out of the car and asked why the other party blocked the road, but the other party did not say anything, started cursing, and even got out of the car and directly beat the reporter with his fists.
One of them also used stones to smash the reporter’s glasses and mobile phone. The beating lasted for more than a minute, and the reporter was injured in many places. During this process, the reporter did not fight back at all.
On the evening of May 30, some self-media contacted the local police station. The police station replied:
The vehicle owner’s information has been obtained through the license plate number, “The person has run away, and we are now arresting him.”
In addition, there is another saying that the person who beat the reporter is suspected to be a family member of the deceased teacher. However, this statement was denied by insiders:
“The identity of the person who beat the person is unknown at present, but it can be confirmed that it is not the family member of the deceased, according to the feedback from the (reporter).”
On the early morning of May 31, a leader of Jimu News made a public statement on the matter in his circle of friends:
“The reporter was sent out by me, and I am very sad and self-blaming. His wife is sick at home, and he was originally taking leave to take care of her.
After the incident of the drowning of two teachers in Zhijin County, Bijie, Guizhou, I suggested that he go to investigate.
Before leaving, I was still encouraging the reporter to cherish the opportunity to experience the scene and not to worry too much. But I underestimated the evil of these people in Bijie.
Driving to track and block the reporter’s way, the reporter took the initiative to hand over a cigarette to show friendliness, but what he got in return was a direct curse;
The beating in the deserted place for more than a minute, the reporter did not fight back, smashed the mobile phone and glasses with stones, and wiped the fingerprints on the door handle of the reporter’s car before leaving.
They are acting like bandits, but their methods are so professional! The reporter’s right to interview and personal rights are protected by law! Those who beat people must pay the price for their violent behavior!
We firmly defend the rights of the reporter and must get justice!
Bijie, Guizhou, must give the reporter, the society, and the public opinion an explanation! Announce the identity of the person who beat the person and their behind-the-scenes instigators!”
As of now, the Bijie official has not publicly responded to the incident of “Jimu News reporter being beaten during the interview.”
