Mao Zedong made a detailed analysis of the various classes in Chinese society in his article, revealing the positions and roles of each class in the Chinese revolution. Mao Zedong believed that the Chinese society at that time could be mainly divided into five classes: the landlord class, the rich peasant class, the middle peasant class, the poor peasant class, and the working class. He pointed out that the landlord class and the rich peasant class were the enemies of the Chinese revolution, while the poor peasant class and the working class were the main force of the revolution. The middle peasant class was in a wavering state and needed to be won over and united.
