Gao Hua | How the Red Sun Rose

“How the Red Sun Rose: The Origins and Development of the Yan’an Rectification Movement” is a historical work by historian Gao Hua on the history of the Chinese Communist Party’s Yan’an Rectification Movement. Published by the Chinese University of Hong Kong Press in 2000, it has been reprinted dozens of times since then.

“How the Red Sun Rose” became a banned book in the People’s Republic of China because it revealed the CCP’s thought reform model and contradicted the official mainstream narrative’s definition of the Yan’an Rectification Movement. On February 14, 2020, the book won the 2020 Special Achievement Award of the American Levenson Book Prize.
