The chairman of Hunan Airport Group was criminally detained for allegedly raping a woman after a dinner. I looked at the comments of netizens after reading the news on Weibo, and it was really surprising that most of them supported him. Those men generally believed that the woman was framing or setting a trap.
The victim is sympathetic – but the victim is this suspect.
The “engagement rape case” in Datong, Shanxi, is roughly the same in public opinion. Those men seemed to be indignantly questioning: Why accept a high betrothal gift if you don’t agree to have sex? It seems that they believe that the betrothal gift is buying and selling people, and the woman has no reason to say “no” after accepting the betrothal gift.
Legal discussions are of course valuable, but they are not the focus of public opinion. The terrible reality I noticed is that there is a widespread resentment towards women online.
Screenshots circulating online show that even male lawyers are verbally abusing the victimized women, even cursing her, “never having a man to ask for her.” This is really shocking. Resentment makes people lose their composure – maybe it allows them to restore their true colors, throw away the hypocritical coat, and reveal their “true self.”

They even lost basic education. The long era of education failed to teach them to speak like a civilized person. Or, when facing “disobedient women”, they exposed their true colors.
There are many people who applaud them. Looking at the comments on Weibo, the condemnation of female victims actually accounts for the majority.
Strange resentment, and behind this resentment may be a kind of panic. Men are increasingly unable to understand the world, and women are trying to master their own bodies and destinies, and they are no longer “obedient.”
Even in traditional areas like Shandong and Henan, profound changes are taking place. I heard about some divorce cases when I went home for the Spring Festival, and the “men’s camp” was dumbfounded. The older generation also pointed fingers, thinking that it is difficult to grasp young women nowadays, “They just leave when they say they leave.”
News of “divorce queues on the first day of work” was reported in one place in Shandong, and the official refuted the rumor as false news, “Only one picture on the Internet is from here.” They did not explain whether the divorce rate here has risen significantly.
The fact I observed is that divorce is becoming common in rural Henan, and it no longer has moral implications. This is a valuable progress. Obviously, young women are more confident. In the milk tea shop in the town, two girls are guarding the shop, and the young men who come to consume are well-behaved and very polite.
If there is any progress in Chinese society, it is reflected in this aspect.
Therefore, this widespread “male panic” is very intriguing. Has the progress of Chinese women reached the point of threatening the status of men?
The chairman of the airport group and the man in Datong do have one thing in common: they both believe they have a certain power. The former is administrative power, while the latter believes that he has the right to control a woman’s body after spending a betrothal gift. They were surprised, but only to find that the world is no longer as they thought it was.
Some people are discussing “gender politics”, as if women have gone too far. However, they are just beginning to express their thoughts. Hatred and panic reflect the general incompetence of Chinese men, not only in terms of “sex”, but also in how to face power and a changing era.
