Fang Yirong | The “Sitong Bridge Slogans” Incident in Xinhua County, Loudi, Hunan

I hope everyone will continue to pay attention to “Fang Yirong” and call on the Chinese authorities to release him.

On July 30, 2024, a banner protest occurred in Xinhua County, Loudi City, Hunan Province, which attracted widespread attention. This incident is considered an echo of the 2022 Beijing Sitong Bridge incident, and it has once again sparked public discussion about the domestic political environment in China.

The incident

On that day, a protester 【Fang Yirong】 hung multiple banners on a flyover in Xinhua County, with slogans opposing the current Chinese President Xi Jinping. The banners directly targeted Xi Jinping, calling for his removal from office and demanding freedom and democracy. In addition to hanging banners, the protester also played similar slogans through a loudspeaker, such as “Stop classes, stop work, remove the dictator and traitor Xi Jinping.” This move was exactly the same as the slogans in the 2022 Sitong Bridge incident. At that time, Peng Lifa hung banners criticizing the government on the Sitong Bridge in Beijing and publicly called for opposition to the zero-COVID policy and a series of political demands.

The Sitong Bridge incident shocked the world in 2022, and this incident in Xinhua County is seen as its continuation, reflecting the dissatisfaction of some Chinese people with the current political system. Although the incident occurred in a small county in inland China, its videos quickly spread on overseas social media, attracting widespread attention. In China, there was almost no reporting on this matter on social media, indicating that the government may have taken information control measures (Radio Free Asia).

According to reports, after the incident, local merchants and passersby were attracted to watch, but the official response to the incident was very rapid. The underlying motives of the incident are currently unclear, and there are no detailed reports revealing the identity of the banner hangers. However, many comments believe that this incident once again exposed some deep-seated contradictions in Chinese society, as well as the dissatisfaction of some people with the current political situation.

After the incident, online comments were diverse. Some netizens expressed their admiration for the protesters, believing that they dared to speak out and challenge authority. However, some comments also believe that such protests will not have a practical impact and may instead lead to more severe suppression.

In general, this incident has once again sparked discussions about political dissent in China. Although the authorities are trying to control public opinion, the impact of the incident has already spread overseas. As time goes on, the follow-up development of this incident and the fate of the banner hangers are still the focus of people’s attention.
