Xipo Original | The Age of Struggle Is Back Again

Does anyone else feel like something isn’t quite right?

For example, the “fastest female nurse,” who was heavily criticized before, apologized yesterday.

She admitted to her “three sins”:

1. “Caused distress and damage to the image of the unit and its leaders. In fact, the unit leaders and colleagues have always been very supportive and caring to me. I failed to express this gratitude in this interview, but instead caused misunderstanding, and I deeply regret it.”

2. “Occupied valuable public opinion resources, diluted the excitement and positive energy of the Harbin Marathon itself, and also brought unnecessary interference to this year’s event.”

3. “Misled the public, causing netizens to have discussions about ‘privilege’ and ‘selling misery,’ which completely deviated from my original intention of participating in the marathon.”

I fully understand her “admitting defeat and shortcomings,” after all, life must go on, and work must go on.

But I wrote an article before, although not directly to “defend her innocence,” but also with the original intention of helping her out.

I think this is completely a small matter in the private domain, which was magnified due to coincidence and accident. If her shout is considered unreasonable by the leaders, they can ignore it. Netizens have scolded her like that, as if she were Huang Shiren or Zuo Shandiao, but completely forgot that she is just an ordinary employee. This is projecting emotions from personal life. For example, if you have difficult colleagues in reality, then you treat this nurse as a hypothetical enemy, scold her desperately, and scold her to death.

The basic point of my article is: exerting such public opinion pressure on an ordinary person is no longer criticism, but witch-hunting.

So now the “witch” admits her mistake, admits that she is a “bad person,” and says that “she must learn to be cautious in public and always pay attention to the social impact of her words.”

My point of view remains unchanged. I wasn’t entirely for her either. I am for the environment in which I survive and must continue to survive. Of course, I also know that I cannot change any netizens who want to continue scolding her. But for “different voices,” existence is value.

Yesterday, I discussed another matter with a friend. Ta has an interesting and vivid saying: “My feeling is that there are angry people everywhere. It’s like I’m in a glass cover, I can see the angry mouths of others, but I can’t hear the sound.”

Many times, if you don’t express yourself, others will not have the opportunity to realize that “I am not the only one who thinks this way.” The so-called “spiral of silence” is this truth.

In a group, if a person finds that their views are different from the majority, they will worry about being excluded or isolated. Those views that are considered “mainstream” will be expressed more publicly by more people, thus appearing stronger. Those who are in the “minority” choose to remain silent because they are afraid of being isolated, and no longer express their thoughts.

But the existence of the “minority” is indispensable for the spiritual breathing of everyone in the group. Even if those who hide in the crowd never realize this, we must try to say a little more.

The female nurse apologized, and they are still scolding. They got one thing right:

“She doesn’t want to apologize, but is afraid.”

It’s just that they hope the female nurse “sincerely admits her mistakes and weeps with tears, yearning for the recognition of righteous people.” And I am afraid of the female nurse’s fear.

I am not going to vouch for the female nurse’s character, I don’t have that ability. Even neighbors and friends, you can’t know how they perform in their units. It doesn’t matter at all whether I think she is good or bad, how I think or say it. Because she is neither a person of power, nor can she decide the rules of the game.

What’s important is to clarify the boundaries between public and private. Public is public, private is private. It’s not that if more people say it, private can become public.

Some people say that she spoke out first, that she turned private matters into public ones. That’s right. But “Ta acted first” and “Ta was in the wrong first” are not sufficient reasons for the group to trample on the individual at will. This is also the reason why I feel constrained and have to continue speaking.

In the era of struggle, everyone who was put on the stage offended the group, and everyone was “in the wrong first.” When one side is a group of people and the other side is one person, there are always countless reasons and methods to make that one person confess and admit their mistakes, and vow never to speak or act recklessly again.

Criticism and struggle are fundamentally different.

Criticism: Usually based on a certain common ground (values, goals, or rules are consistent), pointing out problems, errors, or deficiencies, in order to promote improvement.

The logic of criticism: “Pointing out deviations within a common framework”.

Struggle: Based on fundamental opposition or serious contradiction, the goal is to suppress, change, or even eliminate the other party’s position or behavior.

The logic of struggle: “Seeking victory or transformation within a conflicting framework”.

Now, it seems that the female nurse’s initial shout was a pre-planned conspiracy, completely excluding accident, coincidence, and impulse, while life is full of unexpected events. Everyone may make all kinds of “mistakes” at any time. Under normal circumstances, like bubbles and whirlpools on the water surface, they disappear in an instant.

But if you fix the shape of each bubble and whirlpool, take it literally, and follow the map, then you can indeed write long articles endlessly. Every look, every action can become evidence in court. If you say something impulsive and it is recorded and spread, then it will be even worse.

If you catch a “negative example” and want to criticize and discredit it, then the “evidence” is always endless. The question is, do we really want to live in such a society?

The sum of everyone’s attitude towards others is the social environment in which everyone lives. “The way of the Master is only loyalty and forgiveness.” To do one’s best to treat others is called loyalty, and to extend one’s own heart to others is called forgiveness. (From Qian Mu)

Just ask, how did the female nurse know before she shouted that she would run in what place? How did she know that a reporter would interview her?

Just finished running, the results were very good, she was happy and excited, her hormone levels were high, and suddenly her mind got hot, she was moved by herself, and she thought, “I run so well, so hard, but it’s so troublesome to take time off,” and then she shouted to the unit leader. Even if her claims are unreasonable, is this a heinous crime?

Alas, in fact, there is really no need to talk too much about the truth. Treat yourself as an ordinary person, and treat others as ordinary people, that is enough.

To criticize a small nurse as a symbol of privilege, where do you put the real privilege?

The problem is that after the group gets excited, they no longer want to treat the “public enemy” as a “person,” but as a target, a symbol, a label. Whoever speaks for the “public enemy” also becomes a “public enemy.”

This is a difficult era, some people are difficult in material terms, and more people are difficult in spirit. It seems that if you don’t “sacrifice” a few people every day, you can’t get through the day. But this “appetite” is never satisfied, and this “food” can never relieve hunger and thirst.
