Ren Xinyi | An Open Letter to Xi Jinping

Dear President Xi Jinping:

Hello!

I am Ren Zhiqiang’s daughter. I implore you, based on humanitarian principles, to allow my father to be released on medical parole and to go abroad for treatment, so that he can reunite with his family in the final moments of his life and receive the treatment and care he deserves.

My father was diagnosed with severe prostate disease before his imprisonment and urgently needed surgery. Since his imprisonment, he has not been able to receive surgery and effective treatment, and his condition has been deteriorating. For a long time, he has needed to go to the bathroom more than a dozen times a night, suffering from illness and unable to rest properly. In recent months, he has also been diagnosed with asthma, and his health has been declining. We have repeatedly requested, but still have not been allowed to have surgery, which makes us feel deeply painful and desperate.

My brother was also implicated in my father’s case and sentenced to 9 years in prison. In the four years since my father’s imprisonment, our family has never had a real reunion. Illness and the verdict have almost shattered our family, nearing the point of family ruin and death.

As the daughter of a broken family, I hope to be able to fight for my father’s last chance for humanitarian treatment. I implore the state to show at least a basic respect for life and the most basic humanitarian care, to allow my father to be released on medical parole and go abroad for treatment, and to spend his remaining years quietly in the company of his loved ones.

I am willing to promise that my father will not publicly express any opinions or content after going abroad for treatment. He is over seventy years old and seriously ill, and has no ability to cause trouble for you or the country.

President Xi Jinping, we have previously made the above requests several times through normal channels, but have never received a positive response. We have no choice but to reflect the desperate appeal of our whole family to you in this way. Please give my father a chance to go abroad for treatment. This is not only the protection of the last hope of a family, but also a respect for a life. A tolerant and empathetic decision will become a testimony to history of your benevolence and magnanimity, rather than leaving a heartbreaking regret.

Yours sincerely,

Respectfully!

Ren Zhiqiang’s daughter
