Have you read the Caixin Special Report?
I hope this sentence becomes a social greeting, as important and commonplace as “Have you eaten?”
It’s about the special report “The Death of Suspect Sun Renze” by Caixin reporter Wang Heyan, published on Caixin.com on January 13th.
Any normal person who reads this article will fall into a terrifying and oppressive atmosphere, and their mood will not be calm for a long time.
This is a story about torture. Sun Renze, the son of an old police officer who was unfortunately involved in a “gang-related case”, was difficult to convict due to insufficient evidence. A group of case handlers, for their own benefit, engaged in torture, and the methods were so cruel that they were chilling. Finally, after eight hours of violent torment, Sun Renze died at the hands of these case handlers.
The Caixin Special Report records a series of extremely terrifying details. Here is an excerpt as an example:
Almost all the defendants pointed out that Liu Xianyong, the youngest and first-time participant in the criminal investigation team, was the most excited and active among the eight defendants, and his methods of coercion were also the most “perverted”. They said that during the interrogation, Liu Xianyong either used tape to pull Sun Renze’s leg hair, or hung a Coke bottle filled with water on Sun Renze’s genitals, or pinched the genitals with plastic gloves. And pulling pubic hair, applying a towel to the face and pouring water, and directly pouring water on the face were mostly done by Liu Xianyong.
This is a story of rights protection, although it was only half successful.
Here, there have always been many unjust and wrong cases. It is very rare to convict the perpetrators from the legal, especially the criminal law level. This is another driving force for the strong attention to this case.
People have reason to believe that this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
This is also a story of case handlers seeking self-preservation, one of whom kept and handed over a video evidence, which made the truth of torture leading to death known to the world.
The Caixin article wrote: Sun, the warden of the detention center, instructed Deputy Warden Chai to turn off the surveillance video in advance, but Chai had a second thought. In order to prevent any misfortune from affecting himself, he secretly turned on the surveillance video near the back window. It was Chai’s “trick” that recorded the interrogation process of more than seven hours, which became the key evidence to turn the tide of the case.
On November 6, 2023, the court of first instance ruled that the intentional injury of the 8 law enforcement officers was established, and criminal responsibility should be pursued.
This is a Chinese story that you must read carefully. Every person who reads and forwards it can accumulate a little bit of a sense of security.
Don’t naively think that you won’t become a suspect, so the death of the suspect has nothing to do with you, even if the suspect is wrongly killed.
Why is there the word “suspect”? Because, before a citizen is convicted by the court, he is not a criminal.
Don’t naively think that unfortunate fate will not befall you, holding a fluke mentality, burying your head in the sand, will not give people real security.
Real security lies in the system, putting power in the cage of the system.
Qian Zhongshu was a wise man. On the surface, he was indifferent to the world and engaged in literary theory behind closed doors. In fact, when he was very young, he gave his classmates at Southwest Associated University a topic, which was high-level: “The competition of a country is the competition of models”.
Only a good model and a perfect system can give a law-abiding citizen real security.
