A Monk’s Bowl | Some doctors who “treated patients without authorization” with fever are still in jail

Nowadays, many of us have tested positive for the virus. After testing positive, we develop fevers and try to get doctors to prescribe medication. We also know that there is a severe shortage of doctors, and many doctors in hospitals work almost around the clock.

However, in fact, they are fortunate to be working around the clock now, because a month ago, if they had treated patients with Omicron, or even just treated people with fevers, they could have had their medical licenses revoked or even been imprisoned.

On October 27, 2021, in Lu’an, Anhui, two doctors were sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison and had their licenses revoked, one for unauthorized treatment of fever patients and the other for treating fever patients without a license.

On August 7, 2022, the Yiwu Municipal Public Security Bureau announced the arrest of two doctors who treated fever patients.

On November 20, 2022, the Qiaocheng District of Bozhou, Anhui, issued a notice that doctors Lv Gang and Liu Yunhu were criminally detained for unauthorized treatment of fever patients.

In October 2022, Dr. Zhang from the Haogou Community Health Clinic in Qinglong Street, Qixingguan District, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, was arrested for treating fever patients.

On April 28, 2020, Dr. Li Moulong from the Chenggang Township Health Center in Xingan County, Jiangxi Province, was sentenced to 8 months in prison for unauthorized treatment of fever patients.

On April 2, 2020, Dr. Wu from Huoqiu County, Lu’an City, Anhui Province, was sentenced to one year in prison for unauthorized treatment of fever patients.

In June 2020, Dr. Wu from the “Huakang Baixing Clinic” in Beijing was arrested for unauthorized treatment of fever patients, and the clinic was shut down.

On January 11, 2022, Dr. Guo Moutong, deputy director of a hospital in Fugou County, Zhoukou City, Henan Province, was investigated for unauthorized treatment of fever patients and has been transferred to the procuratorate for review and prosecution on January 5.

The above is not particularly infuriating.

In July 2021, after a doctor in Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou, treated a patient, the patient learned that fever patients must go to large hospitals for treatment, and reported Dr. Ruan, the treating doctor. The doctor was arrested, and the clinic was shut down.

In January 2020, in a hospital in Nanchong, Sichuan, the head of the hospital, Dr. Li, and the deputy head, Dr. Wang, were sentenced to 1 year in prison for unauthorized treatment of fever patients.

In March 2020, a medical institution in Xingan County, Jiangxi Province, had its medical institution practice license revoked for violating regulations by treating confirmed cases of COVID-19 during the epidemic, and the village doctor involved had his certificate revoked.

In December 2021, Shenyang Pukang Hospital admitted fever patients without authorization, causing the spread of the epidemic. Dr. Yan Mouwang, the hospital president, was sentenced to one year and two months in prison. It is reported that Dr. Yan had been engaged in the treatment of osteomyelitis and bone trauma for more than 30 years, with rich experience and superb skills.

The above is only a part of the lives of those who were publicly sentenced for treating fever patients, and I believe that there are also a few who have been restricted from operating or had their clinics shut down around the readers. This November, my family had a high fever and needed an antipyretic injection. After contacting the doctor by phone, I was told to go quietly at night, so as not to be discovered. That doctor is relatively familiar with me. If it were a stranger, he might not dare to treat me at all.

As a doctor, when a patient is in pain, if he turns a blind eye or kicks the patient away like a ball, will he face the judgment of his conscience? But in the past period of time, those doctors who took the risk to help patients in pain had to suffer the disaster of imprisonment.

According to Chinese law, when a person enters medical school and prepares to be trained as a doctor, he must take an oath, one of which is “I am determined to do my best to eliminate human suffering and help perfect health, and to uphold the sanctity and honor of medical skills.”

The third article of the “Chinese Physician’s Declaration” says, be sincere and trustworthy, honest and upright, seek truth from facts, and dare to take on the risks of treatment.

And almost everyone who has received modern medical training will recite the “Hippocratic Oath”, which says, “I will use my ability and judgment to the best of my ability, and abide by the principle of benefiting the patient.”
