Old News Comments | Ukraine-Russia War: China’s Minimalist Position

It has been over a year since Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s recent war of aggression. At this point, the attitudes of Europe, America, and the vast majority of countries in the world have become clear: they have formed a united front based on anti-war, anti-Russia, and anti-Putin. In contrast, countries that support Russia and glorify the invasion are extremely rare. In the world’s understanding, the justice and reason of this war have already had a clear answer.

In such a global situation, the so-called principle of neutrality is difficult to stand, and it is a very difficult thing to advocate neutrality and prove it by abstaining in key UN votes. The world’s attention is focused on Zelensky, focusing on the people fighting bloody battles, whose difficult situation and courage to face death and live again all make the clear-minded people in China think of the Chinese military and civilians who bravely saved the country during the Anti-Japanese War.

Today, the United Nations is at a loss in the Ukrainian-Russian war. Under the constraints that are self-evident, the function of this international organization to stop the war is almost zero. It has completely become a political place for international alliances and alliances outside the war, and it retains the role of a bystander who makes a little commentary on the war, but it cannot truly stand on the side of world justice. The inaction of the United Nations in the Ukrainian-Russian war is comparable to the impotent League of Nations during the Anti-Japanese War.

The Ukrainians are united in their hatred of the enemy and are going through national difficulties together. Their situation and scene should have inspired countries with similar histories to give great respect and support them with sincere expressions and practical actions. Unfortunately, in the global call for support for Ukraine’s resistance to Russia, China, as a major power expected by all parties to have mediation capabilities, recently proposed a Chinese peace plan, which was disdained by countries including Ukraine, and gradually lost the trust basis for mediation.

The role of the Ukrainian-Russian war in reshaping the world pattern has already emerged, and ordinary people can understand this common sense. However, although our diplomacy has a sense of urgency in the use of the international situation, it has rarely made achievements praised by all countries. Every diplomatic action not only does not help to increase the weight of our country’s voice, but also increasingly consumes the credit of a major power. Diplomacy cannot convince the countries of the five continents, this is indeed a symbol of boredom, the ultimate of monotony.

The awkward and passive diplomatic situation has been the largest since the ruling party in Yan’an. Just to say that since the 1970s and 1990s, diplomatic breakthroughs have broken through international encirclement and introduced new forces for the country, and the achievements have been fully demonstrated in international trade, global reputation, and the lives of the people. Thirty years later, in the current situation of the Ukrainian-Russian war, diplomacy has become a predicament, and if the situation suddenly changes, I am afraid that China will still suffer.

Diplomacy and foreign troubles are indeed inseparable. At the beginning of the war, the international community held a pessimistic view on Ukraine’s resistance to Russia, thinking that once the “special operation” began, Putin’s tanks and artillery would conquer Kiev, and Ukraine’s loss of power and humiliation would only be counted in hours. However, the Ukrainian military and civilians fought for a year, and although they were tired, they still stood tall and stood on the surface with an unprecedented positive image. Ukraine has made the international community look at it with admiration. The fundamental reason is that the Zelensky government is good at using diplomacy to deal with foreign troubles.

Ukraine, with its professional management of a small country, has won global attention with its outstanding diplomatic efforts, and has quickly and significantly reversed the situation with the style of a warrior like the Greek god of war. If we honestly evaluate the results of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia in one year, it can be said without exaggeration that Ukraine will definitely write the latest case of a weak country’s diplomacy defeating a strong country’s foreign troubles into world history. What Ukraine has ended is the so-called prejudice of weak countries having no diplomacy.

What Ukraine is going to end also includes the utilitarian hypothesis of “diplomacy is nothing more than international interest exchange.” If diplomacy is based on truth, humanity, and justice, then even if foreign troubles are like Mount Tai pressing down on the top, there is still room for maneuver, and there is hope to win the final victory. The victory of China’s War of Resistance Against Japan has undeniably proved this; but if diplomatic actions are based on misplaced foreign trouble thinking, not only will the outlook on the situation be wrong, but the reality will also be appropriate in both advance and retreat.

The significant characteristic of Ukrainian diplomacy is to substitute history and activate history, not only to expand international living space through alliances and alliances, but also to resolutely make a death oath, that if Russia is too oppressive, it will fight to the death. For our country, the Ukrainian-Russian war must not become an event that is separated from and discordant with Chinese and world history, especially the history of World War II. This should be our country’s minimum position, and we should examine inappropriate foreign trouble thinking and reiterate that relying on personal integrity is the cornerstone of diplomacy.

In summary, our country’s minimum position on the Ukrainian-Russian war should not be the already faltering neutral position, but the position of choosing and upholding humanity, humanitarianism, and justice. China’s great future is of course absolutely optimistic by the Chinese people, but there should be a basic judgment on the phenomenon of being repeatedly passive in dealing with the Ukrainian-Russian war. The Ukrainian-Russian war has triggered a surging tide. Where are the foreign troubles, and what is diplomacy? We should think about it more.
